Google Patent Takes Aim at Camera Shake With a Sliding Sensor
Instead of adjusting a lens to compensate for a shaky hand, Google's latest patent describes a system that physically slides the image sensor itself in two directions at once, potentially offering steadier shots with a more compact optical layout.
How Google's sensor-shift stabilization actually works
Imagine you're filming a short video and your hand trembles slightly. Most phone cameras correct for that by nudging a lens element back and forth inside the camera module. Because the two axes are mechanically independent and perpendicular, the sensor can be positioned precisely at any point in a two-dimensional plane. When gyroscopes detect camera shake, actuators (likely voice-coil motors) push the appropriate carrier in the opposite direction, canceling the blur before it reaches the sensor.

Sensor-shift stabilization has a practical advantage over lens-shift systems: moving one component (the sensor) can correct for shake regardless of which lens element caused the blur, which can make the correction more consistent across zoom ranges. Apple introduced sensor-shift OIS in the iPhone 12 Pro Max and extended it across more models since.
