  • If an accessory is attached and the subject is close, the phone automatically routes the shot through the longer focal-length camera instead.

The depth sensor also tracks a deviation value in its return signals, essentially measuring how noisy or scattered the reflected signal is. That noise level helps confirm how close the object really is and whether the camera switch logic should kick in. The whole process is automatic, with no manual camera selection required from the user.

What this means for Samsung's accessory ecosystem

Clip-on lenses for smartphones are a real product category, popular with hobbyist photographers who want macro or telephoto capability without buying a dedicated camera. The problem has always been that phones treat these accessories as invisible, leaving the user to manually fiddle with settings to get a usable shot.

If Samsung ships this behavior, it would make third-party (or first-party) lens accessories meaningfully more reliable to use. It also hints that Samsung may be investing in a more formal accessory ecosystem around its Galaxy phones, where hardware add-ons and software work together rather than operating independently.
