Apple Patents a Clock Face That Splits Its Background as Time Moves
Apple is exploring a clock face design where the background is divided into two visually distinct segments that shift position and change size as each minute or hour ticks by, turning the watch face itself into a kind of progress indicator.

Ever watched a loading bar slowly fill up as something downloads? Apple is experimenting with a clock face that works on a similar idea, except it's telling you the time.
The design splits the background of a watch face into two segments with different colors or appearances. As time passes, the edges of those segments move and the segments grow or shrink. So at 3:00 the background might be half one color and half another, and by 3:30 the proportions have shifted to reflect that half the hour is gone. The position of each edge encodes a unit of time, like the hour on one edge and the minute on the other.
You'd be reading the time not from numbers or hands but from the shape and size of the background itself. It's a more visual, glanceable way to show time passing, and it could open up a whole new category of watch face designs.

How the two segments resize with each passing minute
The patent describes an electronic device (almost certainly an Apple Watch) that can display a clock face split into at least two background segments, each with a different appearance, such as different colors or textures.
The key mechanic is that both segments have two edges: one edge marks one unit of time (say, the hour) and the other edge marks a second unit (say, the minute). As the time changes, those edges move to new positions, and as they move, the segment between them grows or shrinks. In other words, the size of the segment is a direct function of the current time.
The patent gives two concrete snapshots: at a "first time," the segment has a certain size bounded by edges at certain positions; at a "second time" (later), the same segment has a different size because both edges have shifted. Whether Apple ships this as a single face or as a background option inside an existing face type is an open question, but the underlying idea is flexible enough to serve both uses.

Getting this from patent to product requires no new hardware at all. The entire idea lives in software: calculate how much of the day has passed, draw the watch face background in two differently colored sections, update it as time moves. Apple's watches can already do this.
The design fingerprints here matter. Alan Dye, who has run Apple's visual design team for years, is listed as one of the inventors, which suggests this idea arrived with sketches attached rather than as a theoretical engineering exercise. That usually means the hard creative work is already done.
The shortest path to shipping this is a new watch face option in a future software update, no new watch required. Whether it arrives as a standalone face or as a new option inside the existing customization system, there is very little standing between this patent and something a person could tap on their wrist.
