How the two segments resize with each passing minute

Editorial take

Getting this from patent to product requires no new hardware at all. The entire idea lives in software: calculate how much of the day has passed, draw the watch face background in two differently colored sections, update it as time moves. Apple's watches can already do this.

The design fingerprints here matter. Alan Dye, who has run Apple's visual design team for years, is listed as one of the inventors, which suggests this idea arrived with sketches attached rather than as a theoretical engineering exercise. That usually means the hard creative work is already done.

The shortest path to shipping this is a new watch face option in a future software update, no new watch required. Whether it arrives as a standalone face or as a new option inside the existing customization system, there is very little standing between this patent and something a person could tap on their wrist.
