The idea is that when two devices both catch your wake word at the same time, the winner doesn't just answer your question. It also pushes your personal data, like your preferences, recent interactions, and settings, directly to the device that lost. No cloud round-trip required. The transfer happens over a local connection, the same kind your phone uses to talk to a nearby speaker.

The winner handles your spoken request. The loser goes quiet.

Before this patent, the loser just went back to sleep. Under this new system, the winning device immediately opens a peer-to-peer link (a direct local connection, like Bluetooth or local Wi-Fi, rather than a path through Google's servers) and sends the loser a copy of your user data. The patent describes this data as everything built up from your past interactions on the winning device: conversation history, preferences, personalized context.

The receiving device stores that data on-device, meaning it's saved locally without needing a cloud sync cycle. The next time you talk to that device, it uses a local machine learning model that now has your full context baked in:

  • Your recent requests and preferences from the other device
  • Any configuration changes you made on the winning device
  • Personalized context that shapes how the assistant responds
