Apple Patents a Charging System That Identifies Accessories and Picks a Direction
Your phone's charger doesn't know what it's plugged into. Apple is filing patents to change that, with a system where your device and its accessories introduce themselves before any power flows.
How Apple's charger figures out what it's connected to
A phone sits on a charging pad all night, but the pad has no idea whether it's powering a phone, a smartwatch, or a battery case. It just blasts out power and hopes for the best.
Apple's patent describes a different approach. When you snap an accessory onto your iPhone (or a similar device), the two use a short-range radio signal to exchange ID cards. The phone learns exactly what type of accessory is attached, then decides whether it should be charging that accessory or drawing power from it. The same coil can do either job.
The magnets that click the accessory into place do double duty: they line up the charging coils and the communication antennas at the same time, so the handshake works reliably every time you snap something on.

Translation: The device figures out whether to send power out or take power in depending on what accessory is attached.
How NFC and magnets work together to set charging direction
The system has three main pieces working together in the phone:
- Wireless charging coil: handles the actual power transfer, either sending or receiving, depending on what the device learns about the attached accessory.
- Near-field communications (NFC) circuitry: NFC is the same short-range radio your phone uses for tap-to-pay. Here, it carries a device-type signal from the accessory, telling the phone what it's dealing with.
- Magnetic alignment structure: a ring of magnets that physically snaps phone to accessory. Crucially, it's engineered so the NFC antennas and the charging coils land directly across from their counterparts in the accessory every time.
Once the NFC handshake delivers the accessory's identity, the phone's control circuitry makes a decision: should it push power out to charge the accessory, or pull power in from a battery accessory?
The two-way capability matters because it means a single hardware design can cover a wide range of situations. A battery case snapped onto the back becomes a charger; a device snapped onto an output pad becomes a receiver. The phone figures out the role automatically based on the accessory's reported type.
What this means for MagSafe and accessory ecosystems
The practical payoff here is fewer assumptions and fewer failures. Today, wireless charging accessories either always charge or always receive; pairing the wrong two things together at best wastes power and at worst does nothing. A system that negotiates roles before committing removes that friction for regular users.
Apple's steady investment in MagSafe-adjacent patents signals that the magnetic accessory platform is nowhere near fully baked. If this approach reaches shipping hardware, it would make a growing category of accessories (battery cases, relay pads, car mounts with power) simpler to build and more predictable to use, because the phone itself handles the handshake logic rather than each accessory manufacturer reinventing it.

The underlying problem here is real, if not dramatic. Wireless power is still weirdly dumb: most charging hardware doesn't know what it's powering, and the user pays for that in slow charging, incompatibility errors, or just uncertainty about whether anything is happening at all.
Apple's approach attacks that gap at the right layer. Putting the identification logic inside the phone's own control circuitry, rather than leaving it to accessory makers, means a consistent experience across any accessory that follows the spec. That's a reasonable match for the size of the problem.
That said, this is infrastructure plumbing, not a headline feature. Most people will never think about NFC handshakes or bidirectional coils; they'll just notice that snapping a case onto their phone starts charging it automatically. The value is in what disappears.
