Samsung Patents a Way to Make Tap-to-Pay Work on International Flights
Paying for that in-flight snack with your phone sounds simple, but the moment a plane leaves terrestrial cell coverage, tap-to-pay often falls apart. Samsung has filed a patent describing a system that solves this by handing your phone a pre-authorized payment token before you ever take off.
How Samsung wants your phone to pay at 35,000 feet
You're boarding an international flight, phone in hand, and you want to buy a drink or duty-free item during the journey. The problem is that once the plane is over the ocean, your phone can't reach the servers that normally approve a card payment in real time.
Samsung's patent describes a phone that gets ahead of this. Before you board, the device reads your travel itinerary, contacts your card company's server, and downloads a special one-time payment credential called a token. That token sits on your phone and works even when there's no ground-level connection, so you can tap to pay mid-flight just as you would at a checkout counter.
The phone also cross-checks your GPS location and flight data to confirm you're actually on an aircraft crossing international airspace before activating the token. That extra check is there to reduce fraud, not just to be clever.

How the phone detects flight status and fetches a payment token
The patent describes a flow that starts on the ground. The phone collects travel information (flight details from an itinerary, booking app, or calendar entry) and sends a structured message to a server, including the card issuer's identity and the trip details.
The server replies with data the phone uses to generate or store a payment token, which is essentially a temporary, single-purpose substitute for your real card number. Tokens are already standard in Apple Pay and Google Pay for online purchases; this patent extends the idea to an offline, in-flight context.
A critical piece of the system is the location-and-context check. The phone uses:
- GPS or network-based location data
- Flight status information from the travel record
- Connectivity signals from the wireless radio
To confirm the user is actually aboard an international aircraft, not just sitting in an airport lounge or trying to exploit the offline mode from home.
Once airborne and verified, the stored token can be presented to a point-of-sale terminal on the plane using the phone's existing contactless payment hardware. No live internet connection required at the moment of purchase.

What this means for in-flight shopping and travel payments
For travelers, this is a straightforward quality-of-life fix. In-flight purchases, duty-free payments, and airline app transactions frequently fail or require a crew member to swipe a physical card because contactless phone payments depend on a live network handshake that planes can't reliably provide. A pre-loaded token sidesteps that problem entirely.
Samsung's growing investment in mobile payments infrastructure shows up in filings like this one, which sit at the intersection of Samsung Pay's hardware and the global card network ecosystem. Airlines and payment processors would also need to support the token format for this to work end-to-end, so the bottleneck is less about what the phone can do and more about whether the broader industry signs on.

On the ship-path question, this is almost entirely a software and protocol change. Samsung's Galaxy phones already carry the NFC chips and secure storage needed for tokenized payments, so no new hardware has to exist first.
The harder dependencies are outside Samsung's control. Card networks like Visa and Mastercard would need to issue tokens with an explicit 'offline, in-flight' validity window. Airlines would need compatible point-of-sale terminals and a willingness to integrate with this system. That's a multi-party coordination problem, not a phone engineering problem.
The shortest route to a product here is probably a partnership with one or two airlines and a single card network to run a limited trial, rather than a broad platform launch. The patent stakes out the phone-side architecture, which is the piece Samsung can ship on its own schedule.
