Disney Patents a Way to Project Images Directly Into Natural Crystals
Disney is patenting a projection system that sends images into natural crystals, specifically minerals like ulexite and selenite that already have unusual optical properties. The result could look like a picture floating inside a rock.
What Disney's crystal projection system actually does
You've probably seen ulexite before without knowing its name. It's the mineral nicknamed "TV rock" because its surface transmits images from whatever is placed underneath it, almost like a natural fiber optic cable built into a stone. Disney is building on that quirk.
The idea is to shoot light through a standard fiber optic cable, focus it through a small lens assembly, pass it through a layer that forms the actual image, and then let that image travel into the crystal itself. What you'd see is a picture apparently sitting inside the stone, not projected onto it.
This is the kind of display trick that would feel genuinely surprising in a retail shop, a museum, or a theme park. No screen, no obvious projector, just a natural-looking crystal that happens to contain an image.
How light travels from the source into the crystal
The system chains together several components in a specific order. A light source feeds into a fiber optic cable, which carries the light to a lens assembly containing at least one lens and an optical component. That lens assembly focuses the light onto an image forming layer, which is where the actual picture is created or shaped.
That image is then passed directly into the projection medium, which is either ulexite, selenite, or a blend of both. Both minerals have internal crystalline structures that transmit light along their axes in ways that ordinary glass or plastic don't. Ulexite, in particular, is well-documented for conducting surface images through its fibers.
The critical detail in the patent is the order of the stack: the image forming layer sits between the lens assembly and the crystal. That placement means the image is formed before it enters the mineral, then the mineral acts as the final display surface rather than just a passive backdrop.

This is a genuinely charming patent. The use of TV rock as an intentional display medium, rather than a novelty curiosity, shows creative engineering thinking. It's narrow in scope and probably not a mass-market product, but as a premium display trick for a theme park or a high-end retail object, it's exactly the kind of thing Disney does better than anyone else.
