Sony Patents a Speaker That Sounds Clear Whether Standing Upright or Lying Flat
Sony has filed a patent for a speaker that is engineered to sound consistent whether you stand it upright on a shelf or lay it flat under a TV. The trick is a carefully bent internal tube that manages airflow in both positions.
What Sony's dual-position speaker actually does
A speaker sits on a shelf, pointed at the ceiling, pumping bass into a room. Then someone lays it on its side under a monitor and the sound changes, or worse, moisture from condensation collects inside the duct and degrades the driver. That is the everyday problem Sony is trying to solve.
Sony's patent covers a speaker with an internal tube, called a sound conducting duct, that routes and amplifies the sound coming out of the main driver. The duct has at least two bends going in different directions. In the upright position, air (and any moisture) naturally drains downward and out. In the side-lying position, the lower wall of the duct is angled so liquid still drains toward the exit rather than pooling near the speaker driver.
The result is a single speaker body that you can orient either way without worrying about the acoustics shifting or internal moisture building up over time.

Translation: The internal sound tube features multiple bends going in different directions.
How the bent duct handles two orientations at once
The patent describes a speaker cabinet with an internal acoustic space and a sound conducting duct, which is essentially a bass-reflex port shaped into a tube inside the cabinet. Unlike a simple straight port, this duct has at least two bent sections angled in different directions, placed either back-to-back or at intervals along the tube's length.
The geometry is engineered around two installation states:
- Vertical (upright): The audio input port (where sound enters the duct from the driver) sits above the audio output port (where it exits the cabinet). Gravity pulls any condensation or liquid downward and out naturally.
- Horizontal (on its side): The lower wall of the duct forms an inclined section that slopes continuously downward from the input port toward the output port. Liquid still drains toward the exit rather than collecting near the speaker driver, protecting it from damage.
The dual-bend design is the core claim. By choosing the angles carefully, Sony engineers a single duct shape that satisfies both orientations without needing any moving parts or user adjustment. The cabinet itself stays the same; only the orientation changes.

What this means for compact home audio design
For consumers, this is mainly a convenience and longevity story. A speaker you can freely reposition, upright on a bookshelf or horizontal under a screen, without worrying about sound quality degrading or internal moisture damaging the driver over time, is genuinely more flexible than what most compact speakers offer today.
Sony's ongoing push in home audio hardware has produced a steady stream of form-factor experiments. For product designers, the appeal here is that the same physical unit can serve multiple room configurations, which simplifies manufacturing and inventory. Whether the acoustic performance in both orientations is identical is not something the patent claims, but the geometry is explicitly designed to keep drainage behavior predictable in either state.
Sony's 15th filing in the Audio patents we've tracked since May adds to a run that includes placing voices in physical rooms and a dual-coil speaker driver.
Claim 1 is moderately broad. It covers any audio output device, of any brand, that uses a longitudinal cabinet, a sound conducting duct with two or more bends in different directions, and the specific drainage geometry described for both upright and horizontal use. That is not a trivial combination, but it is also not an abstract idea, so the claim has real boundaries.
The practical blocking power depends on how many competing speaker designs already use multi-bend ports in elongated cabinets. If a rival's speaker has two bends but does not satisfy the inclined-section drainage requirement in the horizontal state, it likely falls outside the claim. If it does satisfy both, Sony may have a case. The claim is narrow enough to be defensible but broad enough to cover a useful slice of the compact speaker market.
As a piece of engineering, the problem being solved is real and the solution is tidy. Moisture protection inside a passive port is not something most speaker buyers think about, but it is exactly the kind of failure that surfaces after a year of use near a window or in a humid room.
