What Google's in-cell AI function actually does

Imagine you're working on a budget spreadsheet and you want a quick explanation of a formula, a summary of a column of text, or a generated description for a product list. Right now, you'd probably open a separate browser tab, ask an AI chatbot, then copy the answer back. Google's patent describes cutting out that round trip entirely.

The idea is that you'd type your question or instruction directly into a spreadsheet cell, the way you already type a formula. A small button or interface element would appear, you'd click it, and the AI would process your request and drop the response right back into that same cell (or the cells next to it).

This is essentially treating an AI model like a spreadsheet function, the same way you might type =SUM() to add numbers. The result updates in place, inside the document, without you ever leaving the page.

How the cell query flows into the AI model and back

The patent describes a platform (read: Google Sheets) where the spreadsheet interface is connected to an AI model on the backend. When a user types a query into one or more cells, the system detects that interaction and updates the interface to show both the query text and one or more UI elements (think a "Run" button or a confirmation prompt).

When the user clicks that element, the system packages the query into a prompt (a formatted instruction the AI model can understand) and sends it to the AI. The model processes the prompt and returns response data, which the system then writes back into the relevant cells automatically.

That breadth suggests Google is staking out territory for a general-purpose AI-in-cell primitive, not a narrow single feature. The patent doesn't specify what kinds of queries are supported, meaning it could cover text generation, data classification, translation, summarization, or formula explanation all under one roof.

What this means for Google Sheets and everyday spreadsheet users

For anyone who uses spreadsheets regularly, this closes a genuinely annoying gap. The current workflow of copying data to an AI chat window, prompting it, then pasting results back is clunky and breaks your focus. An AI function that operates like a native spreadsheet feature would feel much more natural, especially for non-technical users who aren't comfortable writing complex formulas.

For Google, the strategic angle is clear: keeping users inside Google Workspace instead of letting them drift toward standalone AI tools for tasks they're already doing in Sheets. If this ships, it would put Sheets in direct competition with Excel's Copilot integration and with third-party AI spreadsheet tools that have been building exactly this kind of functionality.

Editorial take

This is a real and useful idea, not a speculative moonshot. The workflow problem it solves (AI answers stuck outside the document) is one that spreadsheet power users complain about constantly. The patent is broad enough that it could cover a lot of ground in Google Sheets, and with Gemini already integrated across Workspace, the infrastructure to ship this is clearly already in place.
