Samsung Patents a Fix for the Electrical Noise That Sneaks Into Your Camera Shots
Every time your phone switches cameras, the tiny motors that keep your shots steady can leak electrical noise into the image. Samsung has filed a patent for a system that times its cleanup routines precisely around those power-on and power-off moments.
What Samsung's camera noise fix actually does for your photos
You're shooting a video and your phone switches from the wide lens to the telephoto. In that split second, a small motor inside each camera (the one that compensates for your hand shake) powers up or down, and that electrical transition can produce faint visual noise in the image before the camera settles.
Samsung's patent targets exactly those two moments. When a camera wakes up from standby, the phone runs a noise-reduction pass after the stabilizer motor gets power. When a camera goes to sleep, the phone runs a second cleanup pass before cutting that motor's power. The idea is to bracket each transition with a scrubbing step so the artifact never makes it into your photo or video frame.
Each camera's stabilizer is controlled independently, so the fix applies selectively, only to the lens that's actually switching states. That's a practical approach for phones that carry three or four cameras, where only one or two might be moving between active and standby at any given moment.

These motors draw real electrical current, and when that current changes suddenly (at power-on or power-off), it can induce noise in nearby circuits, including the image sensor.
Samsung's patent describes a processor-level system that manages OIS power individually per camera across a multi-camera array. The two key behaviors are:
- First noise reduction process: when a standby camera is selected, the system supplies power to its OIS module and then immediately runs a cleanup pass to clear any artifacts introduced by the power surge.
- Second noise reduction process: when an active camera returns to standby, the system runs a cleanup pass first, then cuts OIS power, catching any noise generated by the motor spinning down.
The OIS module is described as controlling position across pitch (tilting forward or back), roll (rotating around the lens axis), and yaw (tilting left or right). Handling all three axes through a single VCM driver means the electrical load at transition is non-trivial, which is likely why both the power-on and power-off edges need their own cleanup step.

What this means for multi-camera phones and video quality
For everyday users, this is about image and video quality in the fraction of a second around a camera switch. It's particularly relevant for video, where a single bad frame is visible in playback in a way that a bad still photo just gets deleted.
Samsung's ongoing camera system filings suggest the company is working the problem from multiple angles: hardware, signal processing, and now power management. This patent sits on the power-management side, which is relatively low-cost to implement if the software hooks into existing OIS driver firmware. The fix doesn't require new camera hardware, just tighter coordination between the processor and the motor drivers that are already there.

The shortest path to shipping this is encouraging: the patent describes a software-level instruction set layered on top of OIS hardware that already exists in Samsung's Galaxy phones. There's no new sensor required, no new motor design, no exotic material. If Samsung's OIS drivers expose the right timing hooks, this could land in a firmware update.
The harder question is whether the noise problem this solves is severe enough to be noticeable to real users, or whether it's already masked by the image signal processor's existing noise reduction pipeline. The patent frames it as a distinct, addressable artifact, and the fact that it distinguishes power-on noise from power-off noise suggests real measurement data exists behind it.
This is a focused, plausible engineering patch for a specific annoyance in multi-camera video capture. It won't redefine cameras, but if it ships, you probably won't notice it working. That's the point.
