Adobe Patents a Way to Recolor Any Design From a Text Prompt
Type a description of a sunset, and Adobe's system could automatically repaint your entire graphic design in those colors. That's the core idea in a newly filed patent from the company.
How Adobe's text-prompt recoloring actually works
A designer sits down with a finished logo or flyer and wants to try it in a completely different color scheme, say, the warm golds and oranges of autumn. Right now, that means manually picking new colors and tweaking every element. Adobe's patent describes a system that does this from a single typed phrase.
You type something like "misty forest at dawn," and the system uses an AI image generator to create a picture matching that description. It then reads the colors from that picture and applies them to your design automatically. The result is a recolored version of your original work, in a palette that fits the mood you described.
The system also runs a cleanup step to make sure the new colors stay consistent and that contrast (the difference between light and dark areas) looks right. So you don't end up with text that's impossible to read or colors that look muddy.

Inside Adobe's color-matching and contrast pipeline
The patent describes a multi-step process that connects a text-to-image AI model to a set of color-transformation tools.
- Text prompt to image: A diffusion model (the same underlying technology as tools like Stable Diffusion or Adobe Firefly) generates a reference image from whatever the user types.
- Affine color transformation: This is a mathematical operation that maps the color space of the original design onto the color space of the generated image. Think of it as stretching and rotating a color chart so that the design's palette aligns with the new one.
- Convex hull projection: A geometric method that checks whether any recolored values have drifted outside the range of colors that actually appeared in the reference image. Any stray values get pulled back inside that range, keeping the palette consistent.
- Contrast enhancement: The system then adjusts brightness values (luminance) across the design so that readability and visual balance are preserved after the color shift.
The whole process runs inside a graphical user interface, meaning the user never leaves their design tool. The original design's structure, shapes, and layout stay intact; only the colors change.
