How Apple's gaze-based Mac unlock actually works

A laptop sits locked on a desk while its owner works on another device nearby. Someone brushes the trackpad by accident, or a notification lights up the screen. Under Apple's current Auto Unlock, that might be enough to trigger an unlock sequence.

This patent describes a tighter check. A device you're already using, say your Apple Watch or iPhone, monitors whether your attention is actually on the locked machine. Only if you're looking at it does the unlock go through. If you glanced away, or someone else nudged the device, nothing happens.

For you, that means your Mac stays locked even when something taps its keyboard, unless you are the one paying attention to it. It's a small but meaningful addition to the idea that your devices should know when you're present, not just when something is pressing their buttons.

The critical criterion is gaze direction: the attention-aware device must confirm that the user's attention is pointed at the companion device, not somewhere else in the room.

If this makes it into a shipping product, the practical change for you is subtle but real: your Mac would stay dark until you actually turn your eyes to it, even if someone else is nearby pressing keys.
