Apple is working on a display system that watches how close you are to a screen and automatically zooms the interface in or out to match. It also knows when you've walked up to take control with your hands, and adjusts accordingly.
How Apple's proximity-based zoom actually works
Imagine you're across the room from a screen on your kitchen counter. The text is big and readable from a distance. Then you walk closer, and the screen reshuffles itself to show finer detail at a smaller size, because now you're close enough to read it. That's the core idea in this Apple patent.
The system tracks your proximity and switches between two different zoom levels automatically. When you're far away, it favors large text and simple controls you can act on with just your voice. When you move closer, it shifts to a denser view meant for hands-on interaction, like tapping and scrolling.
There's also a timeout built in: if you step away again and stay away long enough, the display reverts to the zoomed-out, voice-friendly layout. The whole thing is designed to let Siri and the interface work together across both modes without you having to manually adjust anything.
How the system detects distance and switches magnification
The patent describes a computer system (likely a display-equipped device) that monitors user proximity through sensors and responds by changing the magnification level of what's on screen.
Here's the basic flow:
- When the system detects you're far away (meeting a first set of "proximity criteria"), it displays the interface at a larger magnification suited for viewing at a distance.

The patent also covers scrollable interfaces that have interactive elements: the system can disable certain buttons or controls when you're actively scrolling, and re-enable them when specific conditions are met. This prevents accidental taps mid-scroll, a common annoyance on touch displays.
What this means for hands-free displays and Siri
The most obvious application is any screen that lives in a shared or hands-free environment, think a smart display in your kitchen, a CarPlay screen in a car, or a future Apple TV interface. These are all contexts where you sometimes talk to the device from across the room, and other times walk up and tap directly on it. Right now, most interfaces don't adapt to that transition at all.
This patent suggests Apple is thinking about Siri as something that works in tandem with a physically adaptive UI, not just as a voice layer bolted onto a static screen. That's a more cohesive vision for a digital assistant than what most devices offer today, and it fits the direction Apple has been pushing with more context-aware interactions across its devices.

The proximity-triggered zoom addresses a real, everyday awkwardness: the moment you walk up to a voice-controlled screen and have to squint or manually resize things to use it with your hands.
