A security camera stares at an empty hallway all night, capturing far more color detail than anything downstream can actually use. You end up paying for a chip that generates data most devices can't handle.

Sony's patent addresses that mismatch. The idea is to build a sensor that captures four or more color channels but then runs a conversion step right inside the chip, producing a simpler image with fewer colors. The rest of the device, the processor, the storage, the display, only ever sees the trimmed-down version.
