Apple Patents a Camera Button That Changes What It Does Based on Press Pressure
A single physical button could soon do two completely different things in Apple's camera app, depending purely on how hard you press it. No menus, no switching modes, just pressure.

How the system tells a light tap from a firm press
The patent describes a device with at least one physical hardware button whose behavior changes based on press type, specifically the amount of pressure applied.
Inside the camera app, a light press of the first type triggers a synthetic depth-of-field operation (think portrait mode: the phone digitally blurs the background to make your subject pop). A firmer press of the second type, which applies measurably more pressure to the same button, instead triggers a standard media capture operation, meaning it takes a photo or starts recording.

What this means for your next iPhone photo session
For everyday iPhone users, the concrete payoff is fewer taps to get to a common effect. Right now, toggling portrait mode or switching capture modes usually means tapping on-screen controls while you're trying to frame a shot. A pressure-sensitive button could collapse two steps into one physical gesture, without requiring you to look away from your subject.
The wider pattern here is Apple's steady investment in hardware-button input on iPhone. The Action Button introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro already showed Apple's interest in repurposing physical controls. A pressure-sensitive camera button would extend that idea further, turning a simple press into a two-state input that the software can interpret differently based on context.

The real-world payoff here is modest but real. Portrait mode blurring and shutter are two of the most common things iPhone camera users reach for, and right now they require separate taps in different parts of the screen. Collapsing them onto a single button, separated by press force, removes a small friction that adds up over thousands of photos.
The risk is discoverability. A button that secretly does two things based on pressure is only useful if you know about it, and most people won't. Apple would need to surface this behavior clearly during setup or through on-screen cues, otherwise the feature exists for power users and almost no one else.
This is a focused, narrow patent. It doesn't reinvent the camera or promise a new way of seeing. It just proposes a cleaner path between two things you already do.
