Apple Patents a System That Routes Your Wi-Fi Through a More Private Connection
Apple has filed a patent for a way to automatically move your iPhone or Mac to a more privacy-protective Wi-Fi connection when one is available, without you doing anything. The key is teaching your device to advertise its privacy preferences and let the network respond.
What Apple's automatic Wi-Fi privacy handoff actually does
You're sitting in a coffee shop, connected to the Wi-Fi, and somewhere in the background your phone and the router are negotiating. Most of us have no idea that conversation is happening, let alone whether it's happening in a way that protects your identity on the network.
Apple's patent describes a system where your device and the Wi-Fi access point speak a shared language about privacy-enhanced connections. When you connect, your phone announces that it supports a feature called BPE (think of it as a flag that says "I can do private mode"). The access point then sends a private message back, telling your device to switch over to a specific link that has that privacy protection turned on.
The practical idea is that your device ends up on the most private connection the network can offer, automatically. You don't reconfigure anything. The router does the work of finding the right path and directing you there.

How the network steers your device to a BPE-capable link
This patent covers the handshake that happens when a device wants to roam onto a privacy-protected Wi-Fi link in a multi-link device (MLD) network. Modern Wi-Fi 7 routers can broadcast on several frequencies at once, each treated as a separate "link." Not all links may have the same privacy features enabled.
The system works in three steps:
- Your device receives a beacon or probe response (the standard broadcasts a router sends out to announce itself) that includes a signal indicating at least one of the router's links supports BSS Privacy Enhancement (BPE), a standard that hides certain network identifiers to make it harder for third parties to track your device across sessions.
- Your device connects and, during that process, tells the router it also supports BPE. This is the capability handshake.
- The router sends your device a unicast management frame (a message addressed specifically to your device, not broadcast to everyone) recommending it transition to the BPE-enabled link.
The result is a targeted redirect. Because the recommendation is sent as a private unicast message rather than a public broadcast, the transition itself doesn't expose your device's identity to other listeners on the network.

What this means for Wi-Fi privacy on future Apple devices
Wi-Fi tracking is a real and underappreciated privacy issue. Even with MAC address randomization (a feature Apple already ships), patterns in how devices discover and connect to networks can still be used to fingerprint them. BPE is designed to close more of those gaps at the network protocol level, and this patent describes the coordination layer that would make it work in practice on modern multi-link routers.
For you as a user, the experience would be invisible but meaningful. Your device would land on the most privacy-protective Wi-Fi path available, without any manual steps. Given Apple's sustained investment in network-level privacy standards, this fits a broader pattern of pushing privacy down into the infrastructure rather than treating it as an optional setting.

Claim 1 locks down a specific three-step sequence: a device spots an announcement that a privacy-protected connection is available nearby, declares its own privacy support while joining the network, and receives a direct suggestion to move onto that protected link. Any hardware built to run that exact handshake falls inside this claim.
The word "recommending" matters because the claim covers a suggestion, not a command. That precision makes the claim narrower than a broad patent on secure wireless routing, but it also makes it very hard to design around, since the recommendation step is simply how this kind of privacy handoff works in practice.
If protected Wi-Fi links become a standard expectation in phones and laptops, this claim sits at the moment a device first finds and joins that protection. Any manufacturer building that discovery flow into a product would need to take this seriously.
