Samsung is working on a system where your smartwatch does the heavy lifting when you pay with your phone, automatically confirming it's really you before any money moves.

Ever had to fumble with your phone's fingerprint reader while trying to tap and pay at a busy checkout? Samsung's patent describes a setup designed to get rid of that friction entirely.
Here's the idea: your phone and your smartwatch are already paired and talking to each other. When you put the watch on your wrist, the system generates a kind of digital handshake between the two devices. When you go to make a payment, your phone checks in with the watch to confirm it's still the same trusted device you registered, not a fake.
If everything checks out, the watch handles the identity check directly, whether that's your heart rate pattern, a fingerprint on the watch face, or another on-device sensor. Your phone gets a simple yes-or-no answer and processes the payment. You barely have to do anything.

The system works through a two-step token exchange. When the phone detects that a registered accessory (like a smartwatch) is being worn, a device manager on the phone generates a first authentication token, essentially a one-time code, and passes it to the phone's payment app.
When a payment is requested, the phone asks the watch to produce its own token (a second authentication token). The payment app then compares the two tokens. If they match, it means the watch on the user's wrist is the same device that was registered at setup, not a spoofed or cloned one.
Only after that token match does the phone ask the watch to collect user authentication, such as a biometric reading from the watch's sensors. The watch sends back the result, and the phone decides whether to approve the transaction.
