The gap between this filing and a finished product is the engineering left unwritten: how focus distance actually improves tracking accuracy, when it helps versus when it creates noise, and how much weight it should carry against what the image itself shows. Those are real problems, not small ones.

If Sony's engineers have already worked those out internally, this patent is the legal paperwork for something close to ready. If the claim is staked to protect future exploration, the timeline is anyone's guess, and the document alone gives no way to tell the difference.
