What Samsung's split-screen writing reader actually does

Live video of a whiteboard or notepad is often too small, too blurry, or too fast to read comfortably. You end up pausing, rewinding, or just missing something. Samsung wants to fix that by building detection directly into how a device displays video.

The idea: your screen is divided into sections. The main area plays the video as normal. A second area automatically crops and enlarges whatever region contains handwriting. A third area pulls the writing out and shows it as clean, typed text, updated as the content changes.

How the device splits, crops, and transcribes in real time

The patent describes a control method for an electronic device with a multi-zone display. When the device is playing a video, it continuously scans the frame to identify a writing area, meaning any region that contains handwritten text, drawn diagrams, or similar markings.

Once that region is found, the system does three things at the same time:

  • Plays the full video in the first area (the main view).
  • Crops and magnifies just the writing region into a second area, so it's easier to see.
  • Extracts the text from the image and displays it as typed characters in a third area, updated live.
