What Sony's clamp-style phone controller actually does

You're playing a game on your phone and your thumbs keep slipping off the flat glass edges, or your wrists ache from holding the thing like a sandwich. Sony's patent describes a controller built to fix exactly that.

The design splits into two halves, one for each hand. A right-hand grip presses against one side of your phone, a left-hand grip presses against the opposite side, and a flexible cord connects the two. That cord tension is what holds the whole assembly onto your phone, no clamps or screws needed.

The result looks a lot like the Joy-Con concept from Nintendo's Switch, but designed specifically to attach to a phone you already own, using nothing more than the squeeze of the cord pulling the grips inward.

The core of the patent is simple: two controller units and a cord that holds them together around a phone.

Right-hand unit: shaped to be gripped in the right hand, with a flat face (the "abutment portion") that presses flat against one side of the phone's body.

Left-hand unit: the mirror image, pressing against the opposite side of the phone.

Flexible cord member: connects both units and, because it has tension, pulls the two abutment faces inward so they clamp the phone between them.

The patent does not specify what buttons, triggers, joysticks, or electronics sit on each grip unit. Claim 1 covers only the physical attachment mechanism, which means the protected idea is the cord-tension clamping method itself, not any particular button layout or wireless chip. That is either admirably focused or intentionally broad, depending on how you read it.

What this means for mobile gaming comfort

Mobile gaming is a massive market, and the single biggest complaint from dedicated players is that flat phones are uncomfortable to hold for long sessions. A controller that attaches without a rigid rail or proprietary connector could, in theory, fit a wide range of phone sizes just by adjusting cord tension.

For PlayStation fans in particular, a Sony-branded phone controller would be a natural companion to PlayStation's growing mobile game catalog. Whether this specific cord-and-clamp design ends up in a retail product is unknown, but it signals that Sony's hardware team is actively exploring physical accessories that bridge console-style play and everyday smartphones.

Claim 1 covers three physical things: a right-hand grip, a left-hand grip, and a flexible cord connecting them, with each grip pressing against one side of a phone. No buttons, no electronics, no specific materials required. Just two handles, a cord, and a phone sandwiched between them.

That simplicity is the point. Any product built around that same clamping-and-cord structure falls inside this claim, even if a competitor adds a battery or extra controls on top, because those additions do not change the underlying shape Sony has described.

The one meaningful boundary is the word "flexible." A rigid bar connecting the two grips would fall outside this claim entirely, which means Sony has staked out the flexible-cord version of this idea specifically, and that distinction is where any future product dispute would begin and end.
