How Samsung's per-object photo tuning works

Imagine you take a photo at sunset. The sky is gorgeous but your friend's face looks washed out, or you fix the face and the sky goes flat. Most phone cameras have to pick one setting for the whole image, which means something always loses.

Samsung's patent describes a system that first identifies every major object or region in a photo (sky, skin, grass, buildings) and then applies different contrast and color adjustments to each one. The sky can get punchy contrast while skin tones stay natural, all in the same shot.

This works by labeling each pixel with what it belongs to, then using separate tuning rules for each category. The camera isn't just brightening or darkening the whole frame; it's making targeted decisions based on what it's actually looking at.

Inside Samsung's semantic segmentation tone mapping

The patent describes a two-step pipeline running on a phone's processor.

Step 1: Semantic segmentation. The device runs an AI model that analyzes the image and assigns every pixel to a category, called a semantic class (think: sky, face, foliage, road). The result is an indexed image where each pixel carries a label rather than just a color value.

Step 2: Multi-scale local tone mapping. Tone mapping is the process of adjusting brightness and contrast so images look good on a screen. "Local" means it does this region by region rather than globally across the whole frame. "Multi-scale" means it does this at multiple zoom levels simultaneously so edges stay natural. The key twist here is that each semantic class gets its own weight, a tuning value that tells the processor how aggressively to adjust contrast and color for that specific object type.

Because the weights differ by class, a face and a cloudy sky in the same photo can each receive the enhancement that makes sense for that subject, without one degrading the other. The patent covers this as a general method applicable to any electronic device with a camera and processing capability.

What this means for Galaxy camera processing

For Galaxy phone owners, this kind of processing could mean noticeably more balanced photos in challenging lighting, the situations where current computational photography tends to make trade-offs that leave parts of an image looking flat or oversaturated.

More broadly, per-object image enhancement is an area where phone makers are actively competing. Apple, Google, and Samsung all use AI in their camera stacks, but applying different tone-mapping rules to identified objects rather than zones or luminance ranges is a more deliberate approach.
