Apple has filed a patent describing a laptop display where the camera, speaker, or other components sit inside a small pocket carved out of the screen itself, rather than in the bezel above or below it. If it ships, the black bar at the top of your laptop lid could effectively disappear.

What Apple's in-screen camera island actually does

Every laptop screen today has a border around the picture. That border, called the bezel, is where manufacturers hide things like webcams and microphones because the picture-making part of the screen has no room for them. Apple's patent describes a way to shrink that border dramatically by tucking those components into a small cutout inside the screen.

Think of it like the Dynamic Island on recent iPhones, but applied to a laptop. The display's active, image-producing area would surround a small pocket of non-display space, and a camera or sensor would sit inside that pocket. From a distance, it looks like the screen goes almost all the way to the edge of the lid.

The patent covers both a full hole (an island completely surrounded by pixels, like a notch punched through) and a partial recess (a notch that bites in from one edge). Either way, the goal is the same: more screen, smaller frame, without sacrificing the components you actually need.

How Apple carves inactive space inside an active display

The patent describes a laptop (specifically called out in the first claim as having two hinged housings and a keyboard) whose display is divided into two zones: an active area that contains the pixels that produce your image, and an inactive area that contains no pixels at all.

Normally, the inactive area lives entirely around the edges of the screen. This patent proposes putting a piece of that inactive area inside the active area, either as a fully enclosed island or as a recess that bites in from one edge. The inactive zone is coated with black ink or masking material so it blends in visually.

Inside that pocket, Apple would mount one or more electrical components:

  • A camera or other optical sensor
  • A speaker or microphone
  • An LED or light sensor

The display technology itself can be either LCD (liquid crystal, the older backlit type) or OLED (organic light-emitting diode, the self-lit type used in newer screens). The patent does not lock in either, suggesting the approach is designed to work across Apple's current and future display lineup.

What this means for MacBook bezels and webcam placement

Bezel size has been one of the last obvious frontiers in laptop design. Shrinking the chin and top bar of a MacBook makes it feel more like a window and less like a framed picture, and it lets Apple either make the overall lid smaller or give you more screen in the same footprint. Apple's steady investment in display component integration suggests this is part of a longer arc, not a one-off idea.

For you as a buyer, the practical payoff would be a laptop where the webcam is built into the top of the screen area rather than perched in a thick bar above it. Whether Apple masks the island the way it masks the iPhone's Dynamic Island, or makes it nearly invisible, the end result is a cleaner, more edge-to-edge lid.

Editorial take

Cutting a precise hole in glass, routing a camera behind it, and sealing everything against heat and dust are manufacturing steps this document describes in terms of the finished shape but never explains how to actually build. That gap between drawing the goal and knowing how to reach it is the clearest sign this idea is still some distance from a store shelf.

The document also says nothing about how the screen's software would hide the small dead spot where the camera lives. A person using the device would need to never notice that gap, which means the software problem has to be solved before the hardware change feels invisible to anyone.

The shortest route to a real product runs through engineering answers to both of those open questions, and nothing here suggests that work is complete. The design is specific enough to show real effort underway, which makes this matter, but specific enough to ship is a different standard entirely.
