Sony Patents a Game Controller With Joysticks You Can Slide Out and Swap

Sony's patent application describes a game controller where each joystick sits in its own small cartridge that slides out the back. You could swap in a taller stick, a decorated one, or simply a fresh one.

A game controller with its front faceplate removed reveals modular joystick units that can be pulled out and swapped. Drawing from patent filing US 2026/0310309 A1.

What Sony's slide-out joystick controller does

A player has spent hundreds of hours on one game controller, and the left joystick has started to feel loose. On most pads that joystick is fixed inside the body, so fixing it means opening the whole thing up or buying a new one.

Sony's patent application describes another layout. Each joystick sits in its own small unit, with its own circuit board and plug, that fits into a slot at the back of the controller. Lift off the top cover, release a small latch, and you can slide the unit straight out and slide a new one in.

The filing says the replacement could be a fresh unit, a taller stick, or one with a decoration. The idea is that a part you touch constantly becomes a part you can replace, much like a battery.

From the filing · CLAIM 1
… an electrical connector mounted on the circuit board and configured to be electrically connected to an input device along a front-rear axis; and a guide extending along the front-rear axis.

Translation: The joystick slides straight in and out along a front to back track to plug into the controller.

How the joystick unit slides in and locks

The claims center on the stick unit itself. It has the joystick, a pivot mechanism (the support that lets the stick tilt and spin), a small circuit board that detects how the stick moves, an electrical connector on that board, and a guide. The connector and the guide both run along the front-rear axis, so the unit plugs in and out by sliding in a straight line.

Several dependent claims add detail:

  • The guide is a groove that takes a matching ridge on the controller body. It can narrow toward the rear, so the ridge wedges in snugly and the unit doesn't rattle sideways.
  • A second guide on a side surface keeps the unit steady in the other direction.
  • A projecting tab on the unit catches a stopping member (a small spring-loaded latch). The unit only slides once that latch is moved sideways.
  • A case can house the circuit board and the pivot.

The description adds that the controller's slot opens both upward and rearward, so you can hold the top of the unit while pulling it out the back. It also describes a top cover you can remove without a screwdriver, a stick cap that pulls off its base so you can change the stick's height, and a function button built onto the unit.

From the filing · THE ABSTRACT
A part provided with an operation member in an input device is enabled to be replaced easily. The input device includes a stick unit (30) including an operation stick ( 13 ) and a circuit for detecting movement of the operation stick.

Translation: Sony designed the thumbstick module so players can quickly swap it out for a new one.

Why replaceable joysticks matter to gamers

For you, the practical win is repair and personalization. Thumbs hit the joystick more than any other part of a controller. If the owner can swap it, a worn stick no longer ends the life of the whole pad, and you can pick a stick height or finish that suits your hands and your games.

The rest of the filing points the same way. It describes magnetic rear buttons you can pop off, a three-position switch that limits how far a trigger travels, and a stick cap that pulls off its base. Together that describes a controller built as a kit of replaceable parts.

Sony's 25th filing we've tracked in input and haptics since May follows ideas like a motorized button presser and a finger grip that pushes back.

Editorial take

The gap between this patent and a finished product is unusually small. The whole idea is a controller body molded with a slot, plus a stick module that slides in and locks. No new chips, no new software, just shaped plastic and a spring latch.

Sony already sells controllers with swappable stick modules, so the factory knowledge and the audience both exist. This looks like a cleaner mounting method: one straight slide, one plug, one click to lock.

It matters most to people who wear out their sticks or want to tune how the controls feel. For everyone else, the controller feels identical, which is exactly the point.
